Master of Educational Leadership - current study

"A critical aspect to this hermeneutic process is that we start with experiences rather than theory. Another important aspect is that we engage in a style of writing that is less academic (in the formal sense) and more intuitive, in the sense that we engage in the interpretive act of writing and re-writing with more of an 'expression' than an argument. We are not setting out to convince someone of the meanings within a story as we each have a different lens through which we view the experience. What does occur however, is a 'gathering of essential ideas' around the nature of leadership. "
Professors Michelle Morrison and Chris Branson

I have embarked on the process of completing my Master of Educational Leadership; however this has also started a huge area of personal growth!  I am interested in the process described above and look forward to whatever learning comes my way! This initial phase, while encouraging a less formal style, has also introduced us to a very formal genre. Academic language and its use challenges those of us who are not immersed in this style of discourse on a day-to-day basis!

I am fascinated with the very academic language we are being exposed to. Suddenly I am speaking like a thesaurus! My vocabulary base is again being challenged and I love that I need to search a dictionary as I read through the suggested  readings. For example, many of you may have been wondering about the word hermeneutic. Well, so was I. It is of Greek origin and means to make clear, to interpret.

The leader in me and who I am are inextricably linked. My hopes are that I begin to understand with more clarity the dispositions that are important to me, and how these dispositions create the culture of leadership that I weave around me. Much of this culture around me in my current position I have joined, but how do I influence those around me? In what ways do the choices I make encourage change in the people around me? how does this influence grow and develop our organisation?
